ROGER CHAPMAN Live Opera House Newcastle 2002

As the years went, the singer’s voice mellowed and became richer, and though his bite remained in place, now Chappo acts like a strange, if adorable, uncle…

This was a good time to catch Leicester’s finest with the first half of the show capturing his immaculate covers of Chuck Berry’s Downbound Train and Bob Dylan’s Blind Willie McTell.

There is also a real nugget with his version of the little-known 18 Wheels And A Crowbar by hot country band BR-549. His band, The Short List, also get a chance to show a few licks themselves on the Mickey Jupp song of the same name.

Chapman showcases the Family songs he wrote with Charlie Whitney, including Weaver’s Answer, In My Own Time and the peerless Burlesque.

Steve Pumfrey, Leicester Mercury (March 26 2009)

All in all this is a fabulous live recording…if you’re new to the man and want to hear what a seasoned rock veteran who gets better with age sounds like, then check this one out

Ryan Sparks, www.classicrockrevisited.com (May 2009)

All the songs are well recorded as Chapman performs his own, and Family’s, favourites to an enthusiastic audience…

Classic Rock Society (June 2009)

Chapman has 40 years worth of experience, he loves the stage, the crowd loves him, his band are smoking hot and this is a must for any real rock fan…

Amplifier (September 2009)

The CD features some excellent tracks which show a change in direction from (his) Purple days. The music is more jazz rock and funky…

ROGER CHAPMAN He Was…She Was…You Was…We Was

Hard rock and r’n’b played with a lot of energy, features a large band providing a full sound. Alongside two guitarists (Steve Simpson also playing mandolin), drums and bass also get Poli Palmer on vibes/synths, Tim Hinkley on piano and Nic Pentelow on Saxophone. And many will recognise bassist Boz Burrell.

Roger Chapman has been around for a long time and released a range and quantity of material. This album is a definite career highlight, from a time when the UK was succumbing to New Wave. Here in its entirety with extensive liner notes and a bonus track. A very decent package. ****

Joe Geesin, www.getreadytorock.com (October 2005)

…finds Roger and his band in excellent form…The quality is excellent…fans and admirers alike will love to have a copy of the release…

Classic Rock Society (November 2005)

The former Family frontman and his free blowing band stomp their way through blockbusters like ‘Prisoner’, ‘Soldier’ and ‘Who Pulled The Night Down’ with the power and passion which has become a Chapman trademark over the years

Kevin Bryan, Stirling Advertiser

A little too muso for mainstream success, perhaps, Chapman seems content with his place in the European market…serving up raw-throated rock to a devoted following who couldn’t care less about any hip quotient.

Record Collector (January 2006)

..This set really does capture what Roger Chapman is all about…

This concert, recorded late last year at Newcastle’s Opera House, features songs throughout his career, right up to current efforts…As you would expect from someone like Chapman, he surrounds himself with the best players around…Chapman, as always, gives a 100% performance. The man’s a national treasure.

Extras include a frank interview with the man himself and a comprehensive written history of his career to date. This is quite the best Angel Air Waves DVD yet released, even topping the recent Culture Club 20th anniversary concert.

Record Collector(May 2003)

It is a warm experience, as if he is playing just for the listener – and the stage is delicately lit. There is nothing flashy, just a man and his voice. As well as a montage of his career, the bonus material also includes a lengthy interview with Roger which provides an insight into just what he is all about.

…this DVD is an excellent reflection of the high energy, sweat soaked Chappo gig which sees him trawl through sixteen songs which include many of his solo career highlights, as well as several choice Family classics …this is a value for money package which captures the excitement and intensity of a Chappo gig perfectly
