This was a good time to catch Leicester’s finest with the first half of the show capturing his immaculate covers of Chuck Berry’s Downbound Train and Bob Dylan’s Blind Willie McTell.
There is also a real nugget with his version of the little-known 18 Wheels And A Crowbar by hot country band BR-549. His band, The Short List, also get a chance to show a few licks themselves on the Mickey Jupp song of the same name.
Chapman showcases the Family songs he wrote with Charlie Whitney, including Weaver’s Answer, In My Own Time and the peerless Burlesque.

Hard rock and r’n’b played with a lot of energy, features a large band providing a full sound. Alongside two guitarists (Steve Simpson also playing mandolin), drums and bass also get Poli Palmer on vibes/synths, Tim Hinkley on piano and Nic Pentelow on Saxophone. And many will recognise bassist Boz Burrell.
Roger Chapman has been around for a long time and released a range and quantity of material. This album is a definite career highlight, from a time when the UK was succumbing to New Wave. Here in its entirety with extensive liner notes and a bonus track. A very decent package. ****

This concert, recorded late last year at Newcastle’s Opera House, features songs throughout his career, right up to current efforts…As you would expect from someone like Chapman, he surrounds himself with the best players around…Chapman, as always, gives a 100% performance. The man’s a national treasure.
Extras include a frank interview with the man himself and a comprehensive written history of his career to date. This is quite the best Angel Air Waves DVD yet released, even topping the recent Culture Club 20th anniversary concert.
