They say every dog has its day. The same could be said for a particular town or city in pop music. The
Essex resort of Southend-on-Sea put itself well and truly on the music map in the 1970’s. To be fair it had
enjoyed a bit of notoriety in the previous decade when rhythm and blues band The Paramounts hit the
charts with “Poison Ivy”.

The Southend area became a breeding ground for no fewer than five acts who all secured major record deals. The Kursaal Flyers, Dr Feelgood and Eddie And The Hot Rods all enjoyed chart success while Mickey Jupp and Lew Lewis became part of the Stiff Records roster.

The role of singer Paul Shuttleworth was crucial to the success of The Kursaal Flyers. Paul was always the
most recognisable of the Kursaals. Broadcaster John Peel had once likened him to the Cockney comedian
Arthur English. Paul was very dominant on stage and it came as no surprise when he re-signed to CBS to fly
solo. And that’s where this compilation comes in.
