WISHBONE ASH CLARK-HUTCHINSON SAM APPLE PIE

Angel Air 1997-2012

Welcome to our October newsletter!

October sees the release of the critically acclaimed 1969 debut album from SAM APPLE PIE. The band had a bluesy/rock unique sound and were a firm favourite on the London music scene regularly playing venues such as the historic Lyceum.

Also in the month, a live album from STACKRIDGE with tracks taken from 2 BBC radio sessions (1971 and 1973). The album includes a 15 minute version of 'Slark', and 'The Lyder Loo' which is much sought after by Stackridge fans as it is the only recording of this track which was originally slated for inclusion on the "Man In A Bowler Hat" album.

In November, we have a live album from WISHBONE ASH. The album was recorded at the Rock Heroes Festival, Geneva in 1995 to celebrate 25 years of touring and recording. The CD has been enhanced with film footage of opening track 'The King Will Come' - accessible via computer.

Finally, a much sought after classic album from 1969 by CLARK-HUTCHINSON. The duo of Andy Clark and Mick Hutchinson branched out from their band Sam Gopal’s Dream to produce this classic album. 8 bonus tracks are included  - taken from their March 1969 recording debut, an unreleased collection of blues and rock that showcases their stunning musical ability.

MEDICINE HEAD play The Borderline, London on Thursday 18th October 2012!

JOHN FIDDLER

JOHN FIDDLER has returned to the UK and whilst he conjured MEDICINE HEAD from the primal swamp of BLUES, FOLK and ROCK 'N' ROLL, way back in the 60's, along with super spirit harmonica, Jews harp and mouth bow wizard Peter Hope Evans. Sourcing instruments and transport from junk shops and junk yards, they touched a slow burning fuse, with an almighty fire and some excellent classic Hit Singles ('Pictures In the Sky', 'One And One Is One', 'Rising Sun' and 'Slip And Slide'). And from the ashes...

It's been a few years, but John is back on the boards, guitar in hand, harmonica full of soul, heart on his sleeve, and both feet shaking the ground.

Presenting songs from a lifetime, and this particular time around, John is joined onstage by the following sprit players…of course, there may be surprise apparitions. Guitar DZAL MARTIN, Drums ANDY TREACY and Bass JAMES FOX

WISHBONE ASH

WISHBONE ASH Live In Geneva 1995 (SJPCD402)

In 1995 to celebrate WISHBONE ASH's 25th year as a touring and recording band ANDY POWELL decided to celebrate with an appearance at The Rock Heroes Festival, Geneva on 6th April 1995. Recorded live on a 48 track digital mobile the band produced a classic, guitar driven, melodic rock performance.

As one reviewer wrote back in 1995 "This is a truly great 'live' Wishbone Ash CD. The sound and the vocals are perfect and of course the guitars sing beautifully. The sound quality rivals the best live CD's I have ever heard, great mix and very clear. Just get it and you will love it"

The CD is enhanced and will play in PC's with Flash Player film of the opening track of the concert 'The King Will Come'.

CLARK-HUTCHINSON

CLARK-HUTCHINSON A=MH2 (SJPCD404)

Back in 1969 ANDY CLARK and MICK HUTCHINSON decided to branch out from their band SAM GOPAL's DREAM and produce an album and as a duo they recorded their first album release in two twelve hour sessions in London during May.

Promoted by their then record company Decca via their underground label NOVA as a 'powerful hard rocking blues band' whose album was 'years ahead of it's time'. In effect they produced a classic album that still today is much sought after.

The bonus tracks on this CD were actually their March 1969 recording debut, an unreleased collection of blues and rock that showcases their stunning musical ability but sadly the 'suits' at the record company deemed them too 'blues' and instead instructed the band to produce a fusion of psychedelic, jazz, blues album with a classical bent 'A=MH2' fitted that bill and was released in February 1970!

SON OF A BITCH

SON OF A BITCH Victim You (SJPCD394)

Originally formed in 1974 SON OF A BITCH were led by guitarist GRAHAM OLIVER and bassist STEVE DAWSON before they joined up with another band called COAST and together they changed their name to SAXON (the rest is NWOBHM history)

Fast forward to 1996 and Oliver and Dawson had left Saxon and teamed up with another ex Saxon member Pete Gill and Thunderhead singer Ted Bullet and reformed Son Of A Bitch and recorded in Manchester "Victim You", the band's debut concert was headlining at The Isle Of Mann TT plus further festival appearances in Zurich, Holland, Brazil and Spain. The band though folded when Pete Gill had health issues and Ted Bullet had to quit to fulfil his contractual demands for Thunderhead.

The album has now been remastered and included is a bonus studio track never before released from the original 1996 recording sessions.

BREWERS DROOP

BREWERS DROOP The Booze Brothers (SJPCD400)

Back in 1973 MARK KNOPFLER auditioned for the Buckinghamshire based band BREWERS DROOP and as a fresh faced 21 year old he beat the other thirty five applicants for the job as guitarist.

The band toured throughout the UK and Europe and by May 1974 had completed over sixty gigs and had recorded their album "The Booze Brothers". The band began as a good rocking Cajun band and progressed into a tight, productive unit.

The tracks were recorded at Rockfield, Wales and local boy DAVE EDMUNDS helped out on guitar and production.

Listen and enjoy the fledgling Mark Knopfler cultivate the sound that was to make DIRE STRAITS a worldwide success story.

BOOK CHARTS RISE AND RISE OF ANGEL AIR

To celebrate Angel Air's 10th Anniversary a new book by James McCarraher was published in 2007.

Angel Air

The book details the development of the label, its philosophy, and lists all releases with reviews.

Further information:

www.angelair.co.uk/book_catalogue.htm

'Angel Air is 10' is a welcome celebration of the label's first ten years and for any rocker of a certain age, and with an eye for trivia, makes essential reading. Where else could we read about Affinity, an early jazz rock stomping ground for the great Mo Foster, Warhorse (debut album on the Vertigo 'swirl' label) and what happened to Bobby Harrison of seventies funk rockers Snafu? Author James McCarraher has brought together the 200-plus label catalogue, prefacing each release with an essay culled mainly from the original liner notes.

David Randall, www.getreadytorock.com

...a celebration of the label rather than a detailed account of the every day ins and outs of a small independent record company...'Angel Air is 10' is as much a reference book as anything else.

CD Reviews

BREWERS DROOP The Booze Brothers (SJPCD400)

Brewers Droop had something of a revolving door of members, and Mark Knopfler had a brief pre-Dire Straits sojourn with them, long enough to appear on three of the tracks, but sparkling only on one: the aforementioned 'Where Are You Tonight' Original DS drummer David 'Pick' Withers also passed their way, appearing on two of the tracks. The involvement of Dave Edmunds was as co-Producer of the album at Rockfield Studios but also plays (various instruments) on the sublime 'Dreaming'.

This album evokes history for me, but lovers of early 70s rock will find much to enjoy here...

Fireworks magazine - Paul Jerome Smith

Edmunds' harmonica banjo spice up the delicately countrified "Dreaming" which flies spacewards, yet glances are cast backwards here, to the early '60s whence "Sugar Baby" comes, while the accordion-wrapped "Louise" betrays DROOP's Cajun kicks.

And if "Rock Steady Woman", licked by Steve Darrington's lush organ and female backing, packs a seductive punch, that Sultanic twang notwithstanding, blues "Midnight Special" (not Leadbelly's one) sways proudly in its own right.

Among the four bonuses expanding this reissue hides translucent ballad "Real", and that's where the genuine heart of the group lay. A pity that they stopped brewing.

MATTHEW FISHER A Salty Dog Returns (SJPCD389)

A gentle piece, despite the sometimes dated feel, the album spans a variety of styles that gives it a scrapbook atmosphere. Procol Harum fans will find it intriguing.

Hi-Fi World (October 2012)

The eclecticism of this collection (as well as quotes of Fisher and the casual photos found in the accompanying booklet) leads us to believe these recordings were meant to be demos and sketches rather than a final product. "G-String" and "Linda's Theme" certainly support this...this reissue features three bonus tracks similar to the rest in their breezy, computerized vibe.

CHRISTIE No Turn Unstoned (SJPCD380) 2-CD

'I personally found the CD a riveting listen because it highlights Jeff's rich creativity. If you enjoy good or interesting lyrics backed by musical imagery, then this is a must-buy. I've already listened to all 40 tracks three times since I received a copy a week ago.'

Christie's compositions are typically multi-faceted, sometimes reflective and sometimes more ebullient. His vocals are appealing throughout, and at certain points Paul McCartney, John Lennon and Neil Young are called to mind.

The Beat Magazine (September 2012)

Compiled by Jeff Christie and put together in his studio, the 40 track double disc set compiles a number of Christie tracks and serves as a fine introduction to the band as well as being a great collectible for long time Christie fans. No Turn Unstoned serves as a fine companion release to the 2008 Christie double CD set, also released by Angel Air, entitled Outer Limits.

MWE3

Hopefully this release will make folks aware of how much Jeff has to offer than one hit tune. Top pick.

RED JASPER Anagramary (SJPCD393)

...the tragedy is that it was released with little fanfare and the band called it a day soon afterwards. It is well worth checking out, especially as the band are now reforming and will be playing tracks from it live for the first time.

Classic Rock Society (September 2012)

SON OF A BITCH Victim You (SJPCD394)

...Still, for all the deceptive seriousness of cinematic "Drivin' Sideways", its pounding rock 'n' roll delivers on all fronts - perhaps, thanks to the reserved attack of instrumentalists, while the singer gets DUI-delirious, as he does in the title track and the chain-swinging "Old School" that should please any SAXON fan.

Old supporters will rejoice at having previously unreleased "Running Away (From You)", a bid for the stadium dominance, yet with Gill gone due to ill health and Bullet due to his contractual commitments in the Fatherland it wasn't to be. What was is called OLIVER-DAWSON SAXON today, and that's another story. ***

DME Music Site

There are many riffs that can be traced back to their past work and everything else would have come as a total surprise. The album's best song is speedy Past The Point, even if it has resemblances with Dio's Don't Talk To Strangers. This is a cool document of what they sounded like back then and all in all a decent album. Not great, not bad.

metalcovenant

Now, Bedlam is not an extraordinary band, but its raw power is often attractive and intoxicating. Aiello can sing with passion, as "I Believe in You" demonstrates, and his vocals occasionally reminds us of Maggie Bell's...the rhythm section is strong and pumping (check out "Hot Lips"), and the guitar playing offers tasty licks inspired by the ease of the blues while rumbling and tending towards being shocking (in a good sense, that is; and we're curious to know if Dave Ball is still in form on his new, 2012 solo debut, Don't Forget Your Alligator, also available from Angel Air).

A bonus track in the form of Bedlam playing Cozy Powell's hit single "Dance With the Devil" live (with mediocre sound) rounds things up. (7/10)

Maelstrom

NICK SIMPER & NASTY HABITS Live At Szene, Vienna (SJPCD386)

The spirit of original Deep Purple is kept to some degree - particularly thanks to the 60s styled keyboard playing and a bit of jam incorporated into the songs. The general approach here is is less psychedelic than it was in the late 60s, but it is fresher and rockier, as the guitar player introduces some rawer, modern rock chops into Ritchie Blackmore's role. Just listen to the fervent, robust instrumental "Wring That Neck" or "Emmaretta" (which features cool bass and drums showcases) to get a decent notion of the aforementioned.
