SNAFU

SNAFU Snafu (SJPCD407)

Released in 1973 the album "Snafu" was the birth of one of the finest funk/R&B British acts of the 70's. BOBBY HARRISON who was the original drummer in PROCOL HARUM and played on their HITS "Whiter Shade Of Pale" and "Homburg" had formed FREEDOM switching to lead singer after leaving Procol and recording a number of classic albums before in 1972 launching a solo career and by then had become friends with MICKY MOODY whist touring with JUCY LUCY.

Booby and Micky then formed SNAFU (an unofficial military abbreviation for the ironic phase "Situation Normal All F***** Up!") and recorded at The Manor Studio, Oxford their stunning debut album. The group started to tour to promote the album in Europe and in USA supporting the DOOBIE BROTHERS and The EAGLES.

Remastered with bonus tracks

DAVID COURTNEY

DAVID COURTNEY Midsummer Madness/Shooting Star (SJPCD409)

DAVID COURTNEY has, through a long and successful career, achieved that elusive smash hit record that many generations of songwriters strive to achieve. HIT songs such as "One Man Band", " The Show Must Go On", "Giving It All Away" to name a few

By 1975 he took time out to pursue his solo career, releasing his debut album "First Day" which caused a few ripples in the UK but charted in the USA. Seeking to maintain the momentum of that success he travelled to Honky Chateau Studios, France (where the studio had attracted David Bowie to Elton John to Pink Floyd to Cat Stevens) and assembled an amazing cast of musicians (who collectively performed as ARGENT) and recorded "Midsummer Madness"

On returning to the UK the album was mixed by legendary Beatles engineer Geoff Emmerick. David on playback was not comfortable it was the right album to follow "First Day" and he took the difficult decision to mothball it. With hindsight he had produced a classic Prog Rock album which is now released for the first time 35 years later.

The bonus album "Shooting Star" was recorded in 1980 when David was living at 3361 Cold Water Canyon, Los Angeles a property later made famous by Eddie Van Halen (who bought the house from David) and renamed it 5051 studios. David and Mike Love from The Beach Boys became friends and Mike wanted to take David's new album "Shooting Star" and turn it exclusively into the new Beach Boys album. David's response "No"! Once again he put the album "back in the box" but 33 years later it now sees the light of day.

Two lost gems, mastered and available commercially for the first time.

VERDEN ALLEN’S SOFT GROUND

VERDEN ALLEN'S SOFT GROUND - Love You And Leave You (SJPCD405)

VERDEN ALLEN founder member of MOTT THE HOOPLE has since the 2009 Mott The Hoople reunion (of which he was the driving force in facilitating) been working with his band SOFT GROUND on the live circuit.

Having released solo albums over the years he has now returned to the studio to record a rock album with a full band sound whilst showcasing the swirling Hammond Organ, honed song writing skills and his striking vocals that are his trademark.

'Love You And Leave You' is an excellent mix of rock tracks and ballads and will appeal to both his existing fans and those who are curiously open minded.

SNAFU

SNAFU Situation Normal (SJPCD408)

SNAFU returned to the UK in early 1974 from touring the world playing support to The DOOBIE BROTHERS and The EAGLES and went straight into the studio to record their second album 'Situation Normal'.

The band explored a strong country rock route with MICKY MOODY getting more into playing slide guitar and BOBBY HARRISON producing sublime vocals with the band rhythm section a tight and soulful performance. Released in 1974 the band went on tour in USA supporting ELP and in Europe WAR to support the albums release.

A much sought after classic album.

WIDOWMAKER

WIDOWMAKER Widowmaker (SJPCD413)

1976 saw the launch of a new rock super group fronted by 'two of rocks most inflammable and provocative artists, STEVE ELLIS and ARIEL BENDER'.

STEVE ELLIS had fronted LOVE AFFAIR and enjoyed 5 top 20 hit singles from 1968 to 1970 including 'Everlasting Love' and 'Rainbow Valley' before he left the band to pursue with some success a solo career. ARIEL BENDER had started life in SPOOKY TOOTH before joining MOTT THE HOOPLE and then STEALERS WHEEL.

Signed to Jet Records (owned by the infamous DON ARDEN) WIDOWMAKER produced an album of hard rock to almost acoustic blues. A classic album now remastered with bonus tracks recorded live at The Paris Theatre, London 1976

WISHBONE ASH

WISHBONE ASH Live In Geneva 1995 (SJPCD402)

In 1995 to celebrate WISHBONE ASH's 25th year as a touring and recording band ANDY POWELL decided to celebrate with an appearance at The Rock Heroes Festival, Geneva on 6th April 1995. Recorded live on a 48 track digital mobile the band produced a classic, guitar driven, melodic rock performance.

As one reviewer wrote back in 1995 "This is a truly great 'live' Wishbone Ash CD. The sound and the vocals are perfect and of course the guitars sing beautifully. The sound quality rivals the best live CD's I have ever heard, great mix and very clear. Just get it and you will love it"

The CD is enhanced and will play in PC's with Flash Player film of the opening track of the concert 'The King Will Come'.

CLARK-HUTCHINSON

CLARK-HUTCHINSON A=MH2 (SJPCD404)

Back in 1969 ANDY CLARK and MICK HUTCHINSON decided to branch out from their band SAM GOPAL's DREAM and produce an album and as a duo they recorded their first album release in two twelve hour sessions in London during May.

Promoted by their then record company Decca via their underground label NOVA as a 'powerful hard rocking blues band' whose album was 'years ahead of it's time'. In effect they produced a classic album that still today is much sought after.

The bonus tracks on this CD were actually their March 1969 recording debut, an unreleased collection of blues and rock that showcases their stunning musical ability but sadly the 'suits' at the record company deemed them too 'blues' and instead instructed the band to produce a fusion of psychedelic, jazz, blues album with a classical bent 'A=MH2' fitted that bill and was released in February 1970!

BOOK CHARTS RISE AND RISE OF ANGEL AIR

To celebrate Angel Air's 10th Anniversary a new book by James McCarraher was published in 2007.

Angel Air

The book details the development of the label, its philosophy, and lists all releases with reviews.

Further information:

www.angelair.co.uk/book_catalogue.htm

'Angel Air is 10' is a welcome celebration of the label's first ten years and for any rocker of a certain age, and with an eye for trivia, makes essential reading. Where else could we read about Affinity, an early jazz rock stomping ground for the great Mo Foster, Warhorse (debut album on the Vertigo 'swirl' label) and what happened to Bobby Harrison of seventies funk rockers Snafu? Author James McCarraher has brought together the 200-plus label catalogue, prefacing each release with an essay culled mainly from the original liner notes.

David Randall, www.getreadytorock.com

...a celebration of the label rather than a detailed account of the every day ins and outs of a small independent record company...'Angel Air is 10' is as much a reference book as anything else.

CD Reviews

AFFINITY The Baskerville Reunion (SJPCD398)

Here then is the reunion of 7 buddies to play some good music the old way, without recourse to modern technology, and the result is a delight throughout...

...21 numbers played with conviction, good humour and without any pretention; good versions of Satisfaction, Yesterday and Mr. Tambourine Man, to name some of the better known.

Highlands magazine (December 2012)

STACKRIDGE Radio Sessions 1971-1973 (SJPCD403)

...the otherwise unavailable The Lyder Loo, a discard from The Man ln The Bowler Hat album (on which the other three 1973 session tracks appeared in studio form) and a 15-minute version of the classic Slark from !971, with fabulous Mutter Slater flute, make them well worthy of exhumation...Quirky pop like this is a rarity today, and the rude vocal adlibs on The Road To Venezuela still raise a schoolboy srnile

Record Collector, (December 2012)

SAM APPLE PIE Sam Apple Pie (SJPCD401)

Far from the progressive edge of the UK blues boom, these London good time boys made a decent name for themselves playing competently and larking about on stage - something that clearly endeared them to large numbers of people.

Record Collector, (December 2012)

SNAFU Snafu (SJPCD407)

This album is a nice mix of funk, blues and the soulful singing of Bobby Harrison, whose voice switches with ease from the soul/funk of say 'Drowning In The Sea Of Love' to the more straight ahead blues rock of 'Long Gone'...Two bonus songs on this re-issue are the bluesy, heavy on the Hammond 'Sad Sunday' and 'Dixie Queen', a decent 70's funk rock song.

...An enjoyable album, cleverly mixing funk, rock, blues, soul and country although perhaps with the band covering so many musical bases this may have limited their appeal back in the day.

Jason Ritchie, www.getreadytorock.com (November 2012)

WISHBONE ASH Live In Geneva 1995 (SJPCD402)

Recorded live on a 48-track digital mobile, the band delivered a fine, guitar-driven rocking performance...

Bev Bevan, Bevan's Heaven, Sunday Mercury (December 2012)
