MOD CITY is a 'must-have' compilation of mod culture tracks drawn from 3 decades - 1962 to the mid-80s. Although there have been many so-called mod revivals, the music has long outlasted its 'fad' label. This CD features several bands who typify the genre, including Rupert And The Red Devils, from 1962, a blue-beat band popular on the London club scene at the time and the Teenbeats led by the charismatic singer Huggy Leaver who in 1979 had a huge hit in Canada with the Troggs' classic 'I Can't Control Myself'. Tich Turner and his group Escalator were masters in their fusion of R&B edged ska and achieved a lot of airplay in the eighties with their wild version of Paul Anka's 'Diana'. The South Coast Ska Stars hailing from Hastings and Bexhill in Sussex were an instrumental outfit whose material was both humourous and energetic, in true 2-Tone tradition. This is, then, an essential collection of mod-based material for both the dedicated fan and those new to the genre. Compiled by guitarist Ray Fenwick (ex-Spencer Davis Group,Ian Gillan Band) who also produced and played on many of the tracks, this CD contains 8 previously unreleased titles. Ray also provides enlightenment in the 12-page CD booklet with many previously unseen photos from his personal archive. |
